About James St

James St opened on James Street South in Belfast city centre in 2003, founded by chef Niall McKenna after twelve years working in London under Nico Ladenis, Marco Pierre White and Gary Rhodes. Its opening is widely credited with marking a turning point in Belfast’s restaurant scene.

The Bar + Grill at James St opened alongside it in 2011. In 2018 the two were combined and refurbished into the single restaurant that operates today: a brick-walled, contemporary dining room built around an open charcoal grill.

The kitchen is led by Executive Head Chef Ryan Stringer. The restaurant has operated a chef apprenticeship programme since 2014 and continues to recruit apprentices annually across both kitchen and front-of-house roles.
