James St sits on James Street South in Belfast's Linen Quarter, within easy walking distance of the Grand Opera House, making it a natural stop for dinner before a show.

Rather than rushing a full à la carte meal against the clock, the restaurant's 2- and 3-course set menu is built with theatre-goers in mind: proper courses from a kitchen that also cooks for full evening service, served at a pace that gets you out the door and up the road in good time for curtain-up.

A proper dinner, not a rushed one

The set menu draws from the same charcoal grill and seasonal, locally sourced produce that shapes the rest of the James St menu, so a pre-show dinner doesn't mean compromising on quality.

Expect the kind of dishes the kitchen is known for - starters like crab on toast or crispy squid, mains built around Tyrone beef and daily fish from the grill - arranged into a format that's designed to move efficiently through the evening without feeling hurried. It's a genuine dinner, not a shortened version of one.

Why it works before a show

The location does a lot of the work.

Belfast's main theatres and the city's biggest hotels - the Grand Central, Europa and Fitzwilliam among them - are all close by, so there's no need to factor in a taxi or a long walk between dinner and doors.

The brick-walled dining room, with its high ceilings and warehouse-style windows, has an atmosphere that suits an evening out without feeling like a big commitment, which makes it an easy choice for a date night, a birthday, or simply catching up with friends before a night at the theatre.

Booking around your show time

Because pre-theatre diners are working to a fixed deadline, booking ahead and letting the team know your show time is the best way to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The restaurant opens Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm and Friday to Sunday from 1pm, giving plenty of flexibility around most evening performance times.

Larger groups heading to the theatre together can also ask about the private dining room, which seats up to 40 guests, or the large party set menu available for bookings of 13 or more.
