James St has been one of Belfast city centre's go-to restaurants since chef Niall McKenna opened its doors on James Street South in September 2003.

Set in the Linen Quarter, right in the middle of the city, it's built its reputation on charcoal grill cooking, locally sourced ingredients and a dining room that manages to feel both smart and genuinely relaxed - brick walls, high ceilings and warehouse-style windows that let plenty of light into the space.

Right in the heart of the city

The restaurant's location is one of its biggest strengths. It sits within walking distance of Belfast's main hotels - the Grand Central, the Europa, the Fitzwilliam, Dury's and the Maldron - as well as City Hall, the Crown Bar and the Grand Opera House, and it's an easy walk from Europa Bus and Train stations.

That makes James St a natural choice whether you're a visitor staying in the city centre, a local meeting friends after work, or part of a group looking for somewhere central that everyone can get to easily.

What's on the menu

At the centre of the kitchen is the charcoal grill, cooking dry-aged Tyrone beef alongside whole fish, pork and seasonal vegetables.

The à la carte and set menus run Wednesday to Monday, with a Sharing Steak & Wine offer available on selected days for two people wanting to share a Chateaubriand or Tomahawk with a bottle of house wine.

The kitchen, headed up by Executive Head Chef Ryan Stringer, is complemented by an extensive wine, cocktail and whiskey list, including the full Bushmills range, alongside locally produced beer, cider and gin.

A restaurant for every occasion

James St's central location and flexible dining options make it as suited to a quick lunch or pre-theatre dinner as it is to a full evening out.

The restaurant caters for large groups with a dedicated set menu for parties of 13 or more, and its first-floor private dining room seats up to 40 guests for company bookings, private celebrations and staff parties.

On Sundays, the restaurant opens from 1pm through to late for a roast that has built a reputation as one of the best in Belfast.

Recognition and reputation

James St has been listed among the 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland by the Sunday Times and features in McKenna's Guides to Ireland, alongside a standard listing in the Michelin Guide.

The restaurant runs a chef apprenticeship programme, established in 2014, reflecting its long-term investment in developing talent as well as feeding the city.
