At James St, the charcoal grill has been the heart of the kitchen since the restaurant first opened its doors on James Street South in September 2003.

Every steak that leaves the pass has passed over live charcoal, cooked on a Josper grill that sears the outside while keeping the inside exactly as ordered. It's a simple method, done properly, and it's the reason regulars keep coming back for the same cut again and again.

Built around Tyrone beef

The steak menu is built around Tyrone Beef, sourced locally and dry-aged to develop the depth of flavour that a good steak restaurant depends on. Depending on the day, that means anything from a classic sirloin or ribeye through to bigger cuts designed for sharing, all finished simply so the quality of the meat does the talking.

Alongside the beef, the grill also turns out whole fish, pork and seasonal vegetables, so anyone dining with a mixed table of steak lovers and non-steak eaters is well looked after.

Sharing Steak & Wine

For two people who want to make an evening of it, James St runs a Sharing Steak & Wine offer on Monday, Wednesday to Saturday until 6pm: a Chateaubriand or Tomahawk to share, served with a bottle of house wine. It's one of the best-value ways to try the bigger cuts from the grill without committing to a full à la carte spend, and it's proven popular with couples and small groups looking for an early evening treat before heading on elsewhere in the city.

A steak dinner in the Linen Quarter

James St sits in Belfast's Linen Quarter, in a brick-walled, high-ceilinged dining room within easy walking distance of the Grand Central, Europa and Fitzwilliam hotels, as well as City Hall and the Grand Opera House.

Owned since 2003 by chef Niall McKenna, the kitchen is now headed up by Executive Head Chef Ryan Stringer, previously of Ely in Dublin, who has kept the grill firmly at the centre of the menu while continuing to develop the wider bistro offering.

The restaurant has been listed among the 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland by the Sunday Times and is featured in McKenna's Guides.
