Sunday at James St has become one of the fixtures of the week for Belfast diners.

The restaurant opens from 1pm through to late, giving families, friends and couples a wide window to settle in for a proper roast without racing the clock. It's a slower, more relaxed pace than the rest of the week, and the brick-walled dining room on James Street South suits it well: big windows, high ceilings, and a warm hum that builds as the afternoon goes on.

A roast built on the charcoal grill

James St's Sunday roast has developed a reputation as one of the best in Belfast, and it's built on the same charcoal grill and local sourcing that defines the rest of the menu. Tyrone beef and other seasonal roasting joints are cooked with the care you'd expect from a kitchen that also turns out steaks and whole fish through the week, then finished with proper gravy, all the trimmings, and seasonal sides sourced from Northern Irish producers.

It's a menu built to be shared, unhurried and generous, rather than a smaller weekday plate dressed up for the occasion.

Good for groups, good for families

Because the restaurant opens early and runs late on a Sunday, it works equally well for a family lunch, a catch-up with old friends, or a bigger group celebrating a birthday or christening.

Bookings are taken online or by phone, and for tables of 13 or more there's a dedicated large party set menu designed to keep bigger groups moving through courses smoothly without losing any of the quality.

Anyone after real privacy for a special Sunday occasion can also ask about the first-floor private dining room, which seats up to 40 guests.

Beyond the roast

Sunday lunch at James St isn't limited to a single set roast dinner.

The full menu remains available alongside the roast, so anyone in the group who fancies a steak from the grill, a piece of daily fish, or a lighter starter to share can order exactly what they want.

The wine and drinks list runs from a considered global wine selection through to cocktails, local beer and cider, and an extensive Irish whiskey collection including the full Bushmills range, so the table can be as relaxed or as indulgent as the occasion calls for.

Booking your Sunday dinner

Given how popular Sunday lunch has become, booking ahead is the safest way to guarantee a table, particularly for larger groups or the earlier 1pm sitting.

Tables can be reserved directly through the James St website, or by calling the restaurant on +44 (0)28 9560 0700.

The restaurant is located at 19–21 James Street South, Belfast, BT2 7GA, a short walk from City Hall, the Grand Opera House and the city's main hotels.
